Umbilical Cord Care for new borns

Infants umbilical cord is clamped in the delivery room & it begins to necrose de to the interrupted blood supply. Till the cord drops off, its important to kept it clean & dry as organisms may invade the cord stump & surrounding area. Thus cord care is done to control bleeding, prevent infection & promote healing



DO NOT PULL the cord or ATTEMPT TO LOOSEN it



For infants who are discharged with the umbilical cord still attached, Proper care to it helps prevent infection to the cord.



This care is perform after bathing the child. especially after putting on the new set of clothing.

Cleaning Process



  1. Inspect the area for any abnormalities such as reddness, discharges


  2. Clean the cord with the alcohol wipes from base to top. Discard after each swap.

Precautions

Do Not leave your child alone

Make Sure Everything is within reach to prevent fall while reaching for items

Close child's ears while washing, to prevent water from entering the lacrimal duct

If child can sit up, DO NOT release your hold and let child balance. Child may fall backwards
